Kidder, Vincent and Ammey rode until darkness forced them to stop for the night, at which time they built a fire, ate and fell asleep in a huddle beneath their furs. At first light, they rode again. They maintained this pattern, reaching Nawllah, the half-way point, on the fifth day. After taking a brief respite to bathe and eat a decent meal, they started out again, battling exhaustion.

Sleet was tapping on the windows of the palace as Zino looked over the twenty-six men he’d selected as his generals. “My plan is to lay siege on Nawllah,” he announced. He waited out the ripple of shock that passed through them before he continued. “Once we control the center of the country, we can take any other city.”

“What of their wall of defense?” a man asked.

“It will become our wall of defense,” Zino replied.

“But it’s said it cannot be breached.”

Zino’s look hardened. “All walls can be breached.”

“Sir,” one of the men spoke up. “Desertion continues to be an issue—”

Zino waved a hand, cutting the man off. “I will have a sufficient number of troops to carry out my plan.”

How? Every officer thought it, but none had the courage to put a voice to the question.
